Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

eternal.jpgI almost forgotten that I've seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on DVD about 2 weeks ago. It is an interesting movie by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet so thought I will give it a review.

The movie started with Joel Barish (Jim Carrey), waking up just like another day, heading to train station to get to work, but impulsively, he skips work, heading instead to the shore where he met this girl named Clementine (Kate Winslet), a girl dressed in orange jumper with dyed blue hair. It's almost like a coincidental fate that they meet each other and fall in love, but in fact, they indeed do know each other before and even had a relationship. And strange things start to happen when Joel found out Clementine was actually his ex-girlfriend, who actually has had her memories of their tumultuous relationship earsed.

Out of desperation, he contracts the inventor of the process, Dr. Howard Mierzwaik (Tom Wilkinson), to have Clementine removed from his own memory. But as Joel's memories progressively disappear, he begins to rediscover their earlier passion. From deep within the recesses of his brain, Joel attempts to escape the procedure. As Dr. Mierzwiak and his crew (Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood) chase him through the maze of his memories, it's clear that Joel just can't get her out of his head.

The movie reminds me of Being John Malkovich alot, by messing about with people's head leading to an unpredictable ending. Good to see Jim Carrey trying to get away from being a clown like in most of his movies. It's refreshing to see the serious side of him doing a romance movie, but there's definitely enough comedy in the movie to keep him going and being funny. The whole movie is a time warp, flashing back and forth of their memories, and that's the clever part of it having a huge imagination how the mind works by changing scene to scene unpredictably. I kinda already figured out how the movie will end and how all tie up together, but is heart-warming sad ending and defintitely a good one. I would recommend it.
