The S&M bunch lurking.
I bought this DVD a while back and finally got the chance to sit down and finished watching the movie on two separate nights. Colour Blossoms, is a HK movie directed by YongFan, I have to say I am not that familiar with his work, but the website of this movie is quite pretty and the trailer is intriguing enough so I got sucked into it.
The movie starts off with a rich Japanese woman named Madam Umeki (Keiko Matsuzaka and Harisu when young) was looking at buying a house in HK, and Mei Li (Teresa Cheung) is the realty agent. Umeki is impressed with Mei Li and decided to let her incharge of her old apartment which she decided to letting it out. Madam Umeki is quite a character, always seems like being captured in the old 70s era, so as her apartment, the deco inside was impressive, and Mei Li fell in love with it at once and decided not to letting it out until she bumped into a hunky mysterious japanese stud named Kim (Sho) who likes to film her with his old video camera. In the mean time, a policeman (Carl Ng) who often patrolling around the area is curious about Mei Li and what's been going on in the apartment. Things turn weird, and complicated because Madam Umeki couldn't let go of her past in that apartment and wanting another reenactment by using Mei Li.
This movie is all about love, lust and seduction but definitely not your usual romance drama. Because later we found out, Madam Umeki is actually a transgender, who is interested in S&M bondage. There are whips, spanks, black lycra, vinyl, and chains, plus restrain suffocation as sexual pleasure. The mood settings in the movie has followed the style of Wong Kar Wai's In the mood for love very closely, with a hint of French New Wave. By saying that, I have no idea what the movie is all about. The acting is somewhat awkward, Madam Umeki is very dramatic for sure, I am not sure how many people do talk like her did. I know the movie is meant to be avant garde feel throughout, but it's just not convincing enough for me. I am not into S&M, so this really not my type of movie, and even for S&M fans, I am sure they will considering the act in the movie is lame. It's good to see HK directors are trying to breakthrough and making more art house films instead of cheesy low budget slapsticks, even though I have absolutely no idea what is all about. Now you know why I had to spend 2 nights to finish this film.
