I've seen quite few movies for past few months that I didn't get a chance to do the reviews, so I thought I'll spend this Sunday relaxing at home and let you all know what I've seen.
It's hard to come by a good Hong Kong movie nowdays, even the latest Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle isn't as funny as his previous works. It seems like directors from China nowdays are more talent than the ones from Hong Kong. The movies from China are highly crafted, more arty and poetic, and better storylines. Oh and almost forgot, they must have Zhang Zi Yi to act in it as well, she is EVERYWHERE!!! But the latest movie from China I've seen has no Zhang Zi Yi for a change, a very good storyline, and very nice cinematography shot in Tibet, and it's called A World without Thieves.
Adapted from veteran novelist Zhao Benfu's fiction of the same title, the film evolves around a Chinese-style Bonnie and Clyde - Wang Bo(刘德华), played by Andy Lau, and Wang Li(刘若英), played by Rene Liu. They are partners in crime and passion, living their lives by stealing. Wang Li started to realise she doesn't want to live like a thief forever while they both heading north to Tibet after stealing a businessman's BMW. So she decided that will be their last job and decided to change and have a new life, but Wang Bo loves his money too much and the relationship just got worse.
While they were in Tiber, Wong Li met a young migrant worker named Dumbo(王宝强), who is honest, naive, innocent and convinced that he lives in a world without thieves. Having saved up about 60,000 yuan after five years' hard work for Tibetan Buddhist monasteries on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, he decides to go back by train to his home village, build a house and get married, carrying with him all the cash in a schoolbag.
Coincidentally, a group of thieves are out hunting for preys in the town and they are boarding the same train. So as Wang Bo and Wang Li, who decide to take the same train back to China and start a new life. So as the adventure begins....
The movie's concept is fresh and unique, I don't see many chinese movie set only inside a train cartrige for almost the whole movie. As boring as it sound but acutally it isn't, the storyline is sentimental, touching and makes me believes in faith and karma. The actors in the movie are from all over the place, Andy Lau is from Hong Kong, Rene Liu is from Taiwan, few others are from China like 李冰冰 and 葛优, they are all excellent in acting. I especially like Rene Liu in this movie, her acting is truly convincing and a particularly scene definitely made me shed some tears.
The movie was released December last year, the box office income was reportedly 5.3 million yuan (US$639,000), and the movie sales record reached 80 millions unit within 10 days. I like the movie alot and obviously so as the others. I highly recommended it.
