DNA Art

dnaphoto.jpg
Just saw this website called DNA11, and I think probably one of the coolest thing I've ever seen. It is your own DNA art framed on the wall. What you have to do is send your own blood sample in, they extract your string of DNA out under microscopic camera and turns it into an Art! Genius!!! I am digging the back light glow frame, at a USD$1300 a pop, mmmm maybe I can cut myself and let it bleed, so I can see what I can come up with.

Hi,

My name is Adrian Salamunovic. I am one of the co-founders of DNA 11, the company that makes this art. I just wanted to make a few key points clear:

1. The art is produced using a simple swab (cheek cells) the process is painless and simple. We do not accept blood samples and we send you the easy to use DNA extraction kit.

2. We do not screen the samples for any genetic disorders. We do not keep any of your information file. All biological samples are distroyed after we run the gel. We simply run a cool looking "gel" of your DNA sample for the purpose of creating a truly unique piece of personalized art. You can find more information under our FAQ section or our privacy policy. We go to great lenghts to protect our clients privacy.

Thanks for writing about us!

yeah I've heard about insurance companies using DNA to avoid pay out, but on another hand, wouldn't you like to find out the Da Vinci Code hidden inside your DNA? I am kind of intrigued by what it can tell me, perhaps a few aspects of me that I totally not aware of. Kind of personal I guess...

I used to work for a clinical genetics service (I worked in the cancer registry) and the security of DNA information is a huge minefield. Issues to do with insurance are especially difficult, as many diseases (including some life threatening cancers) have genetic predisposers. If I was going to let anyone do a DNA profile of me I'd want to be real clear about what info they keep, and what they would do if asked by an insurance company or a court for a copy of your DNA profile. It sounds paranoid, but there are potential legal ramifications.

The price is a little high for something you can paint yourself! Who would know any different? ;)
